Match Report

A new opposition, with one of our old players Ash (who lost around half of his body weight one winter and came back about twice as fast in the field) having seen a gap in our fixture card and asking Pete for a match which he was very happy to agree to.

Alas, the weather never appeared to look to be too promising, and even before we started gloomy predictions were being made about our chances for a dry match. So much so, in fact, that a shortened game of 35 overs was agreed before a ball had been bowled. Optimistic, as it turned out...

With Ricky Webber (in his last match before getting married next week - congratulations to both of you from everyone at the club young Ricklar) winning the toss and deciding to bat first, the main man of the Eltham batting display was Matt Alpen, distant relation of Mr Bulpitt. Matt, clearly having missed his cricket, hit the ball to all parts in a belligerent 72, including three large maximums which propelled him up the Six Hitters league after only two innings. Conor, batting up the order much to his own surprise, managed a golden duck, but philosophically told everyone that would listen that if you're going to get a duck, you might as well get it over with quickly - wise words for one so young.

And following a clatter of wickets that took Eltham from 97-1 to 114-5, the heavens opened. An early tea ensued while we all looked for a gap in the clouds, but gap came there none. Ricky and the opposition skipper reluctantly called a halt on proceedings allowing everyone to retire to the bar. This was probably a mistake for Wouldham, for once getting picked up by the missus so off his normal shandies and on the Asahi rather earlier than expected. According to Gail he was, and I quote "slaughtered" by the time she arrived to tip him into the car.

Happy days. On to our old mates Greeheath next week.
